Fortnite was developed and released in 2017 by Epic Games, an American video game and software developer and publisher based in Cary, North Carolina which was founded by Tim Sweeney as Potomac Computer Systems in 1991.
Fortnite is an online video game, available in three different game mode versions that share the same general gameplay and game engine: “Fortnite: Save the World”, “Fortnite Battle Royale” and “Fortnite Creative”, where players collaborate to survive in an open-world environment, by battling other characters who are controlled either by the game itself, or by other players.
The game is one of the most popular games in the world and there are estimated to be 125 million players which joined in less than a year, becoming a cultural phenomenon and earning hundreds of millions of dollars per month.
In “Fortnite Battle Royal” you play alongside 99 other players, each trying to be the last one standing and it is available for solo players, teams of two, and squads of three or four; in “Fortnite Save the World” you can team up with three other players to complete missions. As you play through missions, you can earn in-game items and experience, which will help you build your home base; and in “Fortnite Creative” you can use the game’s building tools to create whatever you want, even though the island you build on is private, you can invite friends to play games with you, including racing and platforming games.
In 2017, Fortnite was nominated for "Best Co-op Game" and for "Best Spectator Game". In 2019 it won the award for “Best Ongoing Game” and was nominated for "Best Nintendo Switch Game", "Best Mobile Game", and "Best Action Game" and also “Game of the Year” at the Pocket Gamer Mobile Games Awards.
