Manchester United F.C. was founded in 1878 as the “Newton Heath LYR Football Club” by the Carriage and Wagon department of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway depot at Newton Heath.
Manchester United is one of the most prestigious football clubs based in Old Trafford, Greater Manchester, England, that competes in the Premier League, the top flight of English football known as "the Red Devils".
By winning the UEFA Europa League in 2016–2017, they became one of five clubs to have won all three main UEFA club competitions.
The club crest is derived from the Manchester City Council coat of arms, even though all that remains of it on the current crest is the ship in full sail. The devil comes from the club's nickname "The Red Devils".
